The purpose of the League of Women Voters is to promote informed and active participation of citizens in government. The League of Women Voters never supports or opposes any political party or candidate for elective office. The League does take positions on certain issues of national, state, and local interest that have been selected, studied, and thoroughly discussed by our membership.
Organization of League of Women Voters
The structure of the League parallels the representative system of government under which we live. Our local, state, and national governments are dependent on each other; the base is the individual citizen. The local, state, and national Leagues also are interdependent.
A local board is elected by the membership at an annual meeting, and state and national boards are elected at biennial conventions. Officers are elected, and the remainder of the board is composed of elected and appointed directors. Directors hold job responsibilities called portfolios, which may be related to organizational development or to program.
